Building Healthy Families: Al's Story 26 December 2018 Prospect Park YMCA community health Park Slope Armory YMCA I was born and raised in Park Slope, Brooklyn. My wife Marilyn and I met when we were teenagers, and we’re now happily raising our daughter, Madison, here. I became a member of the Prospect Park YMCA about 25 years ago. I started taking personal training classes and working out on the machines. It was an easy decision to join the Park Slope Armory YMCA when it opened in 2008. It’s been our family’s go-to place ever since my daughter was old enough to bounce a ball. We signed her up for classes at 5 years old. Now, at 9, she participates in almost every activity the Y has to offer — basketball, soccer, dance, karate, summer camp, the list goes on. Madison absolutely adores her karate and dance teachers. She especially loves going to sports camp every summer. She was even awarded “Camper of the Week” one summer. She always tells me how she likes to think that her Y friends and Y staff are part of our family. It’s really the perfect place for me, my wife, and my daughter to do the things we all love. "I’ve been a YMCA member for 25 years. It’s been our family’s go-to place since my daughter was old enough to bounce a ball. She’s done basketball, dance, karate, summer camp, the list goes on. The Y is truly a staple in our community. I hope one day my daughter takes her children, so they can have the same life-changing experiences my family has had." - Al Fiore The Y has always been a place where I felt comfortable. That became even more evident when I joined the Y’s Diabetes Prevention Program in 2017. I had recently retired from the police force and needed to focus on my health. In one year alone, I lost 45 pounds, which has completely changed my life for the better. The coaches, staff, and friendships I developed with other members were a huge asset in helping me achieve my goals. I cannot thank the YMCA enough for all they’ve done for both me and my family.
