It’s been over a year since I arrived from Afghanistan. At the beginning it was hard — you have to learn the language to understand people. After I went to Y events and made new friends, I learned how to communicate better.

Getting out of my comfort zone was unforgettable. Back in my country, I never had opportunities like I do with the Y. The community service I do helps me build my résumé for college. I’m inspired because I want to help people like they helped me. I’m trying to pay back the community by helping them.

New York is the best city in the world. Now when people ask, “Where are you from?” I say, “I’m from Queens, New York."
